While many health care professionals credit hypnotherapy with being beneficial. A certain percentage of them do not. It seems to be good for some patients, especially at alleviating pain when in hospice care. It shows promise for some who wish to quite smoking and some who want to lose weight. When you are planning to look for hypnotherapy Washington DC is a good place to be.

Those who have used the nicotine patch for help to stop smoking have had some degree of success as well. Some therapists will combine the two for a greater degree of successful outcomes. Some medications used for smoking cessation may have detrimental side effects. Sessions with a trained hypnotherapist can be used alone, thereby assuring the patient of not trading the addiction of smoking to an addiction to prescription medicine.

He should first have a degree and license to practice psychotherapy. Following that, there is additional training in hypnotherapy, usually earning a certificate. In some cases, a therapist with a masters degree in psychology or social work can be an excellent hypnotherapist.

Hypnotism has been successful when used as palliative care for terminal patients. It is usually an adjunct to the prescription medication used to treat the pain. Alternative medicine is often used this way, especially for patients in hospice care.

Hypnotherapy is also used to control obesity. It has had some success with overweight individuals. In some cases a family practice doctor can be certified to provide it. The patient must be open to the idea that it will help. It should also be reinforced at regular intervals, with additional sessions to remain in effect.

A person has childhood events that are buried in the subconscious mind. Therapists theorize that one of these events, if traumatic, may be the reason behind an adult phobia or other mental problem. Through hypnosis these events can be remembered and seen from the adult point of view. They can be understood and worked through to help resolve a current trauma.

Research has been done to confirm the effectiveness of hypnotherapy for pain relief. The group studied are cancer patients. They found it generally lessened the pain. Those undergoing chemotherapy experienced less nausea as well. The conclusion is that hypnotism is effective either along or in conjunction with pain medication.

There are health care professionals who place no confidence in any alternative medical practices. Others will combine one or more of them with prescription medication to ease the pain for terminal patients. Some of these alternative methods are hypnotherapy, aromatherapy, massage, acupuncture and meditation. They are often found to be helpful although to what degree is not confirmed.

There are some other areas in which hypnosis has proven effective. One of these is to reduce stress. Over time, stress leads to heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity and sleep disorders. Hypnosis puts the patient into a relaxation mode, which can help him learn to relax under other circumstances.

The patient who is considering hypnotherapy as a possible treatment should ask all questions regarding how it will be conducted. He should place himself in the care of a therapist who is credentialed and with whom he feels comfortable. This therapy is proving to be successful in helping to cope with and overcome a wide variety of disorders.
