A foster parent has the duty to whole heartedly open his or her doors to children that need foster care and give them all the love, care and security they possibly can. This is a humbling and life changing endeavor for all those taking part in it. In case you are interested, these are the steps to how to adopt a child in NY.

There are currently tens of thousands of children in orphanages in need of a loving foster care home New York City. They range from infants to young teenagers of different ages. Some are eventually able to go back to their birth parents and need temporary foster homes while others need care throughout their care dependent lives.

The first step you need to take is to contact Child Welfare under the NYC Children Service. They will give you an information packet on calling their hotline. This is regardless of where you are in either in New York city or outside the city, you can always access them. You can decide to attend an orientation after your first call or you may just wait until the information packet gets to you. There is also an information forum where you can go and get more information.

The second step would be to attend the planned orientation. Here, the children welfare personnel will take you through an outline of what foster care is all about. This will be your chance to ask as many questions as possible and clear all confusions in your mind.

At the end of the orientation, an application form will be handed to you to fill. Once you are done filling it, you may submit it to you foster care agency. They will contact you and notify when they will begin a home study with you.

The home study is all about getting as much information about you as possible. A social worker will be assigned to work with you to achieve this. The information obtained will be handed in to the courts and the child welfare agency. The information will be used as a determiner in placing children into your foster home. Relevant documents will also be required for submitting. These may include medical reports, birth certificates, marriage licenses and tax returns. All the remaining adults in the household will be checked for Child Abuse and Negligence cases from the State Central Register.

Another requirement as the home study continues should be that you take a Model Approach Partnership in Parenting (MAPP) training programme. This is meant to instill good parenting skills in you. You will learn about how to help children adjust in their temporary homes and how to deal with birth parents. Other information such as you subsidies, rights and responsibilities will also be explained to you here.

Once the home study and the foster parent training are successfully completed, you are now considered a certified foster parent and are fit to commence child foster child care your own home. You can now take up children for care on temporary terms or even adopt a kid.
