Sometime back, chronic pain and addiction were considered as two separate issues. Clinics treating pain were set up in a medical model. Resolving problems associated with addiction applies a number of strategies and the main emphasis is helping a patient in recovering from dependency on alcohol and substance. The two however would not provide a solution for a patient suffering from both addiction as well as chronic pain.



Addiction is very much associated to emotional immaturity. Most of the individuals who are addicts result from failure to have the ability to handle their emotions. Indulging in alcohol and drug abuse will provide relief for a short time although it will worsen in the long run. Once a person is able to overcome addiction, he or she will be forced with the emotions again. For an addict to be successful, he or she must design ways of overcoming the emotions.



The following are steps of overcoming problems associated with chronic pain and emotions. Acknowledging own feelings. This can be hard especially while dealing with difficult emotions. This is essential because one cannot change something he or she does not recognize. It turns important to accept oneself and avoid judging too much. This makes one to be compassionate to oneself so as to note the problem.



Pointing out strength. This helps a person to identify a good thing about him or herself and will help to be calm under pressure. It also reinforces self confidence. Reducing stress is another important step. It is important to relax the body. This will help in reducing the stress hormones and enable someone to think more clearly. A person should calm down and free the mind so as to come up with good decisions.



Avoidance of negative thoughts that causing depression. A lot of individuals who have chronic emotional pain portray pessimism. Thinking negatively will distort you and make your situation to appear hopeless. If you ever feel this way, you should search for some evidence that will result to a good feeling. Believe in yourself by fighting negative feelings.



Fighting inner critic. It happens more so in cases where a case where a person has being judged harshly in the past. One should feel compassion for own self and understand situations. Also it helps in developing a better perspective and look for peace of mind. Another step is to choose the company that one has. People with negative thinking should be avoided.



Avoiding obsession with negative feelings and thoughts. It must be important for a person to identify what he or she believes in. However, one should avoid dwelling in the negative ones. This is because the negative ones do magnify pessimistic thinking and emotions. Better ways should be put in place to avoid the thought of feeling down. If enough time is given to positive thinking, one is able to achieve control which builds a better mental health.



Finally, always maintain balance. This is actually taking into account all that is needed to build a healthy life. It does include food and body exercise. It will also bring in work, relationships and enough sleep. A routine should be made to cater for this.
