Divorce, for example, is becoming commonplace but many people do not realize just how devastating it can be for some members. It can cause severe insecurity, unhappiness and even depression. Counselling can help to counteract these negative effects.

Another reason why families often face disruption is that parents do not always understand the pressures that their children have to deal with. Apart from potentially destructive peer pressure, children live in a world where they are expected to do well in everything. Many children cannot cope with this pressure and consequently start to develop behavioural problems. These problems can have a severely negative impact upon the household as a whole.

Professional counselling for entire families is especially important when one member is aggressive or a victim of substance abuse. It is no use for only the affected member to be counselled. It may therefore be necessary to do some preparation and to try and motivate each member to become part of the solution. Everybody concerned should be fully aware of the purpose if the counselling and of their roles in this process.

One should be careful when selecting a therapist. Many professionals specialize and it is important to choose someone that is experienced in the field that is relevant to the problems that need to be dealt with. Family doctors, social workers and even church officials can often be of great help in this department. Most importantly, there need to be a trusting relationship between the therapist and each member of the household.

It is vital to understand that counselling seldom deliver immediate results. It takes time to work through all the issues and it may be necessary to attend numerous sessions. The therapist cannot guarantee results. His job is to facilitate the process, not to suggest solutions. The families themselves must discover their own solutions. This is only possible if every member cooperates in the process.

Without a doubt, families are the most important building blocks of any society. When families become dysfunctional, everyone suffers. Therapists can do much to make sure that such families are healed and that they can function again. Being part of a supporting family is one of the greatest gifts anyone can ask for.
