Teenagers nowadays live more healthier, promising and prosperous lives than previously. There is an increased expectancy in life as diseases that notoriously posed serious threats such as polio, typhoid and cholera are no longer an issue. Their educational levels have also improved tremendously irrespective of the gender, as more and more people are graduating from college these days. The problems facing teenagers today are more complex.



The harm that teenagers face is usually more behavioral and if well addressed it can be prevented. The examples we can see as being the most distressing are homicide and suicide. It is unfortunate that a significant proportion of them are firearm related. Some are usually arising out of depression as well as other mental complications. In fact the use of firearms provides the leading contribution to teen death.



The media is a constant presence that revolves around a teen who is less preoccupied with much in life and thus relies heavily on all its forms for entertainment. They expose themselves to media such as the television, videos, video games, music, books, magazines as well as newspapers. The media nowadays has harmful effects to teens. Those who watch too much television usually have poorer vocabulary and perform dismally in class.



Indulgence in activities such as drinking, smoking or playing more of computer games. The harmful dimension of this will be when they eventually become addicted to these non-productive methods that will preoccupy their time. These new habits can result in a deterioration in their health.



Another challenge which keeps gaining prominence is the high number of teenagers nowadays not being subjected to the right forms of foods. Very few teens are observing proper nutrition. In fact despite an improved food situation nowadays poor eating habits is affecting everyone irrespective of their social economic endowment. There is more of a liking towards foods that are fatty and a complete disregard for vegetables and salads.



Also the increasing cases of parental divorce and custody conflicts between the former spouses puts them more at risk of depression. It is unfortunate that this drugs are major contributors to lots of accidents among teens with the worst cases being some of them taking them in suicide attempts caused about by depression. Depression can affect them very strongly resulting in them causing harm to themselves or others if it is not properly addressed early.



Most active smokers began at their teens and the number is ever increasing. The high trends of smokers among the young is a major worry as they tend to assume that they will get rid of the behavior when they eventually matures. Research points the smoking in adults more determinant to socio-economic status while in the young it varies greatly from peer pressure to emulation from the mass media shows and celebrities.



Teenagers are also susceptible to drunken driving. This can even occur while they are under influence of drugs. This might not only be on the part of the teen, as they might be exposed to the risk of reckless adult drivers. This are very serious situations and many young ones are at a potential risk of this.
