While a counselor sometimes conducts group counseling for clients with the same disorder, most counseling sessions are one on one. For someone who prefers individual counseling in Port Charlotte FL, there are many listings of therapists available.

There are therapists who use a combination of individual and group sessions. However, in the case of a sensitive topic, individualized counseling is advisable. A client must feel a bond of trust with the therapist.

The first office visit will establish whether or not that trust can be built. It is not the fault of one or the other if it cannot. In some cases two people simply do not feel comfortable with each other.

If you are a woman who will be approaching an intimate topic regarding sexual activity, it may be more comfortable discussing it with another woman. Some men may find it intimidating to discuss their situation with a woman. They may choose to turn to a male therapist.

Counseling might place the main focus on your personal and interpersonal communications. You will be using them throughout your lifetime. Vocational, organizational, social and health concerns are other possible areas you would like to discuss.

When someone learns ways to reduce stress in their lives they will enhance their enjoyment of everyday living. Learning the best ways to cope with a crisis will ease the stress. Mental disorders can be considered as relating to developmental issues.

Intervention may involve a limited number of sessions. But, there are some cases in which therapy may be needed for a longer time. The duration of sessions will depend on the needs of the client and his or her resolving of specific issues.

A fear of something is a phobia. There are some that are comparatively easy to resolve. They will require fewer appointments to overcome. One example that is usually easy to resolve is the fear of flying. A group session may take a trip to an airport and board an actual plane to simulate what it would be like to fly.

If the client has a seriously irrational fear, being afraid of a harmless object for example, the therapy may be of a longer duration. To begin, the reason the client is afraid of that feared object would have to be identified. It may be because of a childhood memory buried deep in the subconscious mind.

A hypnotherapist may be the ideal counselor to handle this situation. The hypnotherapist will be licensed to practice as a psychologist plus have additional training in hypnotherapy. During a session, disturbing memories may be unearthed that have to be confronted and resolved.

There are some mental disorders that require the help of a psychiatrist as well as a psychologist. This is because they need to take prescription medication. A condition such as bipolar disorder usually is helped by medication. The psychologist, not being a medical doctor, is not able to write the prescriptions he or she needs.

The therapeutic relationship must be carefully balanced. It should be friendly without the client treating the counselor as a friend. An unhealthy dependency can developed. Although it is not a friendship it must show that the counselor cares about the improvement the client is making.
