There are many types of therapy developed over the years to deal with a number of different issues affecting people with hard to treat conduct. One approach generally accepted as an effective method of treating a number of different issues is dialectical behavior therapy in NYC. This is a cognitive behavioral approach, which puts emphasis on psychological aspects in treatment. It was developed by, Marsha M. Linehan, a psychologist. It was designed to treat all borderline personality disorders. Today it is the main treatment used in dealing with different types of mental disorders around New York City.

The operating theory is that, individuals often have different reactions to the same situations. It has put its emphasis on those who tend to overreact intensely to emotional triggers similar to those commonly found I relationships with loved ones. They usually have a higher arousal level in these situations compared to an average person. They are able to get more stimulation that is emotional and often require more time to return to a normal baseline level.

Those suffering from this personality behavior experience many mood swings that get extreme. They will get really happy, sad or angry. The sad fact is that many people including loved ones do not know how to handle such situations. Instead, they apply a lot of pressure to these individuals to conform to normal conduct that is acceptable. This leaves victims to suffer alone since they do not have any support and lack proper coping mechanisms.

Dialectical behavior therapy method teaches skills, which help such victims cope with the emotional surges they experience. It is currently the main therapy used to treat this condition. It has been identified as effective in treating other disorders like depression, substance dependence, eating disorders and posttraumatic stress disorder. It uses two principles that are opposite to one another. These are change and acceptance. Therapists accept the condition of the clients but realize that there is a need to change.

The therapy teaches four main skills. Mindfulness helps them be fully aware and stay present in their present moment. Distress tolerance allows them accept and tolerate pain that they are feeling and not change. Interpersonal effectiveness allows them to be able to ask for what they desire and learn how to say no in a way that maintains relationships with others. Emotional regulation shows them how to change those emotions that they want to change.

Therapists usually are empowered to target different aspects or problems that they identify in order starting with the most critical. This hierarchy of treatment is necessary in addressing various issues fast as soon as they are noticed. This helps save many lives. Conduct that proves to be suicidal or life threatening is handled first. It aims to stop any form of bodily harm and suicidal tendencies. Other issues to deal with are those that affect normal treatment.

Behavior that affects standard of life is looked at keenly. This aims at helping patients build strong relationships and maintain them. They are also equipped with skills of managing finances as well as mental disorders. They must also be equipped with new productive skills.

Research has revealed that dialectical behavior therapy is efficient and effective in handling certain issues like suicidal tendencies, substance abuse, social functioning, anger, depression, dropping out from the program and psychiatric hospitalization. It has been effective in achieving good results.
