Children don't always hear what you have to say, and this can be extremely frustrating for the average parents. However, one has to realize that they are not ignoring you on purpose. They are developing and they are adapting to their surroundings. Parents have to treat them as a child and learn more about how to get kids to listen.

Some people become annoyed when their kids are not listening to them. They may repeat themselves or raise their voice. This is not the right approach because it can create an element of fear within the child. The parent will also become more impatient. It is almost like you think your child is ignoring you, but this is not the case.

When they are busy with something, such as an art project, they become completely engaged in it. They forget about what is going on within the home environment. They switch off to everything else, and parents don't always realize this. It is important for parents to connect with their child gently and make sure that they are listening before they actually start talking to them.

Children will start to learn about various orders and commands over time. However, they don't want to become fearful of the parent, thinking that they will become threatened in one way or another. Parents should exercise caution, using empathy and compassion when talking to their child. They will strengthen the bond between the parent and the child.

The brain is developing at this time and this is something that you have to keep in mind. You can't overwhelm your child by talking to them, using a lot of words or using your words in such a way that they are not going to understand. You need to get down to their level. Use their language. They can only take in so much at this stage of their lives.

Have compassion for your child and treat them as if you would want to be treated at that age. It is not always easy when you are growing up and struggling in this way. You need to think of the right way to come up with the most appropriate words which they would use with their friends. In this way you would be connecting with them on their level, and creating a stronger bond.

Of course, there are also kids who have a tough time listening in general because of something like autism. When they are busy with something that are completely focused, and you may not even be able to distract them. Parents need to learn how to talk to a child like this. It is not easy and you may become impatient at time, so this is something you have to keep under control.

Some children who battle hearing what you have to say, may also be suffering from something like autism or attention deficit disorder. If you find that they are switched off and you really can't get into their space, it may be a good idea to consult with a family doctor. They will refer you to a pediatrician. Parents need to handle the situation with a lot of love and encouragement, because it is not easy.
