Modern life involves numerous pressures and family structures have changed. No longer does the mother stay at home to raise the children and to manage the house. In the majority of cases the mother also works. This can make it difficult to raise children in a caring, nurturing environment. It is no wonder that so many parents need help with raising their children. Luckily, with help from a professional parenting coach Oakville families can survive and thrive.

A few generations ago extended families saw to it that all the children in the family receive love, attention and encouragement from all adults within the family group. Finding a child minder never used to be a problem. Unfortunately, those days are forever gone. Modern parents no longer enjoy the support of an extended family. They have to cope on their own.

Many parents only seriously consider the services of a professional mentor when they experience problems. The child may, for example, develop behavioural problems, become rebellious, refuse to accept any form of disciple or disrupt the household. In such cases parents approach a mentor out of desperation. These cases can be difficult because no mentor, however experienced, can guarantee instant results. Dealing with deviant behaviour normally requires time and a lot of patience.

Many first time parents engage a mentor before their baby is born or very soon thereafter. These are parents that want to be the best parents possible. They realize that their approach to raising their child will have to be adapted as the child grow and as his needs change. The responsibilities of the parents also change as the child grows up and many parents struggle to adapt to these changing needs.

Most reputable mentors also pay close attention to the relationship between the father and the mother. If this relationship is not healthy and mutually nurturing is is all the more difficult to set an example for the children and to create a nurturing environment for them. Parents with relationship difficulties may even opt for separate counselling with a different professional.

Mentors normally offer a variety of interaction methods with their clients. One on one mentoring can be very costly. That is why some mentors offer the option of consultations by telephone or Skype. Group sessions are also very popular. In such cases the group members can share experiences with each other, encourage each other and learn from each other. The role of the mentor is mainly to act as facilitator.

Hiring a professional mentor does not mean that successful parenting is guaranteed. The parents is and always will be responsible for the upbringing of their children. They cannot shift that responsibility onto the shoulders of an advisor, regardless of how experienced and well qualified that advisor is. Parents therefore need to be realistic and accept the fact their children are unique, with unique needs.

Responsible parents want to act in the best interests of their children. By hiring a mentor they can get independent and objective advice that may help them to raise their children to achieve their full potential. The family remains the cornerstone of society, even in this enlightened modern age.
