The study of hormones is referred to as endocrinology. This field of medicine studies the disorders that are associated with hormones and the actions of the various hormones in the body. Hormones are useful in the body because they help to control various activities in the body and they have different effects on various body processes. These processes include metabolism, food absorption, growth and development, and reproduction among many others. Here are facts regarding Wichita endocrinologist.

Hormones are usually secreted by glands. Medical practitioners whose specialty is in the study of hormones are referred to as endocrinologists. These professionals specialize in the study of glands and the hormones that they release in the body. These professionals diagnose and treat a wide range of medical conditions in the cause of their work, including hypothyroidism and diabetes among many others.

To be an endocrinologist, individuals should complete ten years or more of rigorous training at post high school level. After obtaining every academic requirement, individuals should then proceed to get licensed in the state they want to practice. Being licensed needs one to pass licensure examination. Normally, board certification is optional in this field.

The professional duties and responsibilities of these practitioners are diverse. The care offered by the endocrinologists is supposed to be life-long as most conditions like diabetes are normally chronic and incurable. Endocrinologists are also supposed to help patients whom they handle to cope with physical limitations coming from the diseases which they might have. Typical daily duties include prescribing medication, doing minor surgical procedures, giving injections and ordering tests.

The duties that one performs most in their line of work are usually dependent on their area of specialization, work setting, and types of patients handled among others. This field is very lucrative and continues to attract many people. One must join an accredited medical school for them to study this course. Admissions into medicine school are usually very competitive and one must have good qualifications in order for them to get a chance.

Admission into medical schools normally needs individuals to possess a bachelor degree from a suitable course. Graduation from the medical school takes four years. Most individuals normally proceed to a residency program which normally takes three to four years. Some of the fields in which individuals can complete residency include internal medicine, pediatrics and gynecology.

Endocrinologists then proceed to complete training by taking a three year fellowship program after they complete residency. Fellowship programs which one can complete might be in fields such as pediatric, reproductive or adult endocrinology. The state license can be issued only after individuals complete the fellowship. They can begin unsupervised practice after they acquire a license.

It is indicated by BLS that jobs in this field will continue growing. The BLS is the agency in charge of collecting labor statistics in the US. It is expected that this field will have a 14 percent growth. The continuing aging of the American population and population increase steer this demand. Population increase and aging are projected to lead to a rise in medical services. By 2015, endocrinologists and other specialist doctors earned a median salary of 411,852 dollars.
