When it comes to massage, there are different types and styles. The most common being Swedish, Shiatsu and Deep Tissue. While Deep Tissue is used in rolfing therapy San Diego, it is much different than massage. For, rolfing is considered an alternative medicine used to provide structural reintegration of the body.

Sometimes called "the recipe, " the therapy consists of ten sessions of body manipulation. Somewhat a cross of chiropractic services and massage, providers only need a license in massage to provide the service. Considered a blend of science and fringe medicine, it remains controversial among professionals such as medical doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists and skeptics.

Creator Ida Rolf for whom the therapy is named, believed that an energy field surrounding the body, what many know as chi can be realigned with the gravitational fields of the earth to provide healing. As a result, many whom work in this area use a combination of body work methods and styles. Whereas, most all believe that the best method in which to bring this energy to the surface is through body manipulation and deep manual therapy.

While massage is often considered a practice created to relax body, mind and soul, rolfing can often be painful. In addition, as the pressure goes deep into the structural aspects of the body, many recipients have also seen a variety of emotional reactions during and after the process. In some cases, emotional reactions can be so severe, psychotherapy is a necessary to help balance out emotions.

While the creator believes in the treatment, it is often known more as a pseudo-science as it involves a connection between the human body and the gravitational aspects of earth. Still, the creator believed that by aligning the energy surrounding the body with these forces, it was easier to manipulate and realign the body back to a point where a healing effect could take place.

In most cases, providers believe as Rolf did, that the body struggles continuously in relation to gravity, especially as a person ages. As such, gravity tends to shorten the connective tissue which can often lead to a number of issues. In order to combat these issues, the therapy works to lengthen the fascia and eliminate pain in the process.

Once the fascia has been lengthened, providers can restore movement and eliminate pain in the process. In addition, the process also reorganizes fascia which is the connective tissue. As a result, the entire body is often healthier once an individual has completed all ten sessions. For, once the connective tissue is realigned with the axis and associated gravity fields, then individuals often sees a great deal of improvement in a number of different areas.

Often referred to as a form of energy or bodywork, or massage, rolfing does much more for the body than any of these practices. In fact, the practice has become so well known that a number of osteopaths are now using the practice as of part of different treatment plans. Whereas, there are also a number of chiropractors whom combine adjustments, exercise therapy and rolfing when treating a number of different issues from scar tissue to bodily function.
