One would think that those people that have a nice house, enough to eat, an education and the chance to enjoy life will be satisfied. This is not always the case. When their basic needs are fulfilled, many people start striving towards discovering the deeper meaning of life. They want to make a difference and they want to develop as individuals. To help them on this road of discovery, numerous people opt for help by means of personal growth mentoring.

Looking for deeper meaning and striving towards self fulfilment s one thing, but most people do not know where to begin or what to do. Some people drift towards alternative life styles, or religion, or charity work. Many of them do not find what they are seeking, because they actually do not know what it is that they desire. This is where the services of a reputable mentor can be of immense value.

Some people think that if they appoint a mentor to help them develop personally but this is a very big mistake. Mentors are not miracle workers and they cannot make decisions for their clients. Their role is to lead the client towards self discovery and to help them to identify the areas where they want to change or improve. It is the client that must make all the final decisions.

Most mentors realize that their clients do not know themselves. Their initial focus will therefore be on a process of self discovery. The client must be helped to look at himself as he is, not as he perceives himself to be. In the process, which can be painful, weaknesses, secret wishes, past disappointments and fears are often exposed. The mentor will help the client to face these issues and to identify the areas of improvement.

Once the client has determined the life areas where he want to develop, it is necessary to set very specific objectives. Too many people never achieve their goals because they are vague about what exactly it is that they want. If a person wants to lose weight it is not good stating that one wants to lose weight. It is necessary to also stipulate exactly how much weight and by which target date.

The next step is to break down each objectives into smaller, measurable steps. This will help the client to remain motivated, because the achievement of even one small steps indicate progress towards the achievement of the bigger objective. It may be a good idea to write these small steps down and to involve loved ones in the process too.

It can be difficult to choose a suitable mentor. The relationship between the mentor and his client need to be based on mutual trust and confidentiality. Many professional mentors offer a free first consultation and some will even refer the prospective client to a colleague that is better equipped to fulfil the needs of the individual concerned. Some people change mentors every now and again.

Man will always strive to be better and happier. The desire for self actualization is not an unhealthy thing. People that experience self fulfilment are more mature and productive. They are more aware of their environments and they are more like to make a positive contribution to society.
