The term intellectual disability is used interchangeably with other terms such as intellectual development disorder (IDD) and general learning disability. The term mental retardation was initially but was dropped due to the stigma attached to it. IDD can be defined as intelligence that is lower than average. People with this kind of disorder have a bigger challenge in terms of dealing with issues that affect their daily lives. With the availability of intellectual disability services, they are able to overcome challenges and learn new skills.There are a number of things on IDD diagnosis and treatment Portsmouth residents should know.

According to the Diagnostics and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, a diagnosis of IDD is made when at least three factors are present. These persons are generally deficient in general intelligence. There intelligence quotient when measured is below 70. Affected people also present with poor adaptive behavior. Most importantly, the disorder must become apparent in childhood in order to differentiate from other mental illnesses such as dementia.

Intellectual disability may be syndromic or non syndromic based on presence or absence of related medical abnormalities respectively. Down syndrome is a common genetic disorder associated with syndromic disability. Presentation of IDD is usually behavioral, with memory, language development and social skills. These persons also have the challenge of keeping certain unacceptable behaviors in check, a term usually referred to as inhibition.

Malnutrition is a major contributory factor in the African continent due to poverty and lack of awareness. Other global causes include fetal alcohol syndrome, rubella syndrome in a pregnant mother, accidental poisonous substances such as lead, among others.

Some take the extra step of helping these individuals obtain employment and even take care of their own families.

Every person has a role to play in rehabilitating persons with IDD, starting from the guardian to the clinician, to members of the community. Their role may fall under any four groups including behavioral, psycho-social, family based and cognitive treatment. Psycho-social intervention is done early in the life of a child before they start going to school. Children are taught simple skills, they are given the freedom of exploring and are trained the same thing over and over again until they master the given skill. They are also rewarded whenever they achieve a certain goal.

Language and social skills come in during the behavioral stage of treatment. With the help of a therapist, children are taught using pictures, shapes and other related tools. Some of the skills acquired during this stage especially among older children include sharing, smiling, following instruction and communication. At a higher level, behavioral and psycho-social are combined. At this level, the memory of the individual is challenged by introducing teaching in math, language and so on.

Clinician come in when complications arise that require their attention. For example, extreme changes in mood among autistic children may require prescription of anti-psychotics and mood stabilizers. You can find this gift in any place and at any time. It is found in high school when young hearts meet. It can also be found in old age as there is no right or wrong time for you to experience this gift. Children who get this gift from their parents, are fortunate and have a head start in life because of this. They are also live happier and more fulfilling lives.

This gift is experienced when a parent looks at a child or newborn baby of the very first time. When a husband looks at his wife while saying their marriage vows and when an elderly parents experiences their grown child achieving greatness, this gift is relived.

People need this gift in order to survive. If the world was devoid of this gift, life would be sad and dull. People would be unhappy and unfulfilled. It is one of the most precious gifts that human beings can experience and God must have known the impact that it would have on people for this gift to still be in existence.

Some people out there may be looking to exploit you. They do this by convincing you that they love you. However, you should know that if someone says this, they must Be willing to show it in actions and deeds as well, not just by word or mouth and if they do sincere and selfless things you may be inclined to believe them.

End your pursuit of happiness.

What?! Why?!

Like any other emotion, happiness is fleeting. It shows up when it wants to and often exits when it feels fit. Happiness isn't really something we can "obtain" but instead something we can experience. In the end, happiness seems to be connected to our daily actions towards growth.

I will say it again. End your pursuit of happiness.

Generation after generation we have been fed that our entire goal in life is to be happy. I'm not necessarily refuting that happiness is a great thing, but where this idea falls short is in the actual implementation of a "way of being" in order to achieve any level of worthwhile happiness.

While many will decide to chase happiness their entire lives, those who begin to understand that constantly growing and evolving will make them happier in the long run will find great joy throughout their lives.

I would never suggest that happiness isn't a critical aspect to living. It is. Who wouldn't want to be happy? What I am simply suggesting is that maybe there's a different way we can take to end up being happier in the long run than trying to chase after happiness itself? I think it's possible that building your dreams, constantly growing and developing and looking to help others would lead to a more fulfilling life than seeking after an emotion that can't really be grasped.

In order to truly feel like you are living you have to be growing. Chasing happiness does not necessarily guarantee that you are going to grow. However, if you focus on daily actions and tasks that can help you develop as a person over time, there's a good change you will find that happiness you've been looking for in the long run.

Give it a shot. Decide that you are going to dive into the world of development, growth, dreams and goals and eventually you might become happier in the long run.

Happiness is deeply connected to personal growth.
